How to Participate in Auctions

Auctions are a dynamic way to buy property, equipment, or other assets. Whether you're interested in real estate or bidding on personal property, understanding the basics will help you feel confident and prepared.

Real Estate Auctions

Buying property at auction is fast, transparent, and legally binding. Here’s how it works:

Before the Auction:

  • Inspect the property during scheduled viewings.
  • Review the legal auction pack (title, searches, contract).
  • Arrange financing in advance—sales are final and deposits are required immediately.

Auction Day:

  • Register as a bidder before the auction starts.
  • Compete with other bidders in real time.
  • If you're the highest bidder and the reserve is met, the property is yours!

After the Hammer Falls:

  • Pay the deposit (usually 10%) on the day.
  • Complete the purchase within the specified time frame (commonly 30 days).

Real estate auctions can offer excellent opportunities—just be sure to do your homework and know your limit.

Personal Property Auctions

Personal property auctions are a great way to buy everything from antiques and collectibles to furniture and everyday items. These auctions may be held in person or online, and each has its own process. Here’s how to participate in both:

In-Person Auctions

Before the Auction:

  • Attend preview times to examine items closely.
  • Make note of lot numbers and set your budget ahead of time.

During the Auction:

  • Register as a bidder when you arrive.
  • The auctioneer will present items one by one—raise your bidder number to place a bid.
  • If you're the highest bidder when the auctioneer calls "sold," the item is yours.

After the Auction:

  • Pay for your items at the cashier’s table.
  • Be prepared to take your items home the same day, unless stated otherwise.

 Online Auctions

Before the Auction:

  • Browse the online catalog and photos.
  • Register on the auction platform and review terms and conditions.
  • You may be able to place pre-bids before the live online bidding begins.

During the Auction:

  • Log in and watch the auction in real time.
  • Place bids manually or use a maximum bid (proxy bidding) system.
  • Watch your items and adjust bids if needed—bidding often speeds up as the auction nears its end.

After the Auction:

  • If you win, you’ll receive an invoice via email.
  • Pay promptly and follow the pickup or shipping instructions provided by the auctioneer.

Whether bidding from your living room or attending in person, personal property auctions are fun, fast-moving, and full of opportunities to score something special.
